Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing his illustrious 23-year career with the Portugal national team to an end.
The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through an emotional video shared on his official Instagram account, where he read a farewell message to Portuguese supporters.
Ronaldo confirmed that he was stepping down from international duty after representing Portugal since August 2003. He described the decision as difficult, explaining that his journey with the national team had transformed his life and given him unforgettable experiences.
In his farewell message, the Al Nassr striker said it was time to hand over the national team jersey and captain’s armband to the next generation of Portuguese footballers.
He reflected on his achievements, personal sacrifices, disappointments and memorable moments throughout his international career, stressing that representing Portugal had always been a source of immense pride.
Ronaldo also acknowledged the millions of supporters who stood behind him over the years, including Portuguese communities living outside the country.
He expressed appreciation to his teammates, coaches, medical personnel, technical staff and family members for their contributions and sacrifices throughout his journey.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also encouraged young Portuguese footballers to believe in their abilities and continue building on the country’s achievements.
Ronaldo’s international retirement brings an end to one of the most remarkable careers in the history of international football.
Since making his senior debut in 2003, he scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, making him the highest-scoring player in men’s international football.
He also captained Portugal to its first major international trophy at the 2016 European Championship, where the team defeated France in the final.
Three years later, he led the country to another international title by winning the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019.
Ronaldo represented Portugal at five FIFA World Cup tournaments and six European Championships, establishing himself as one of the most influential figures in the country’s football history.
His announcement comes after a turbulent period involving the national team, including reports of disagreements with head coach Jorge Jesus following his omission from the starting line-up during a Nations League victory over Norway in September.
Despite previously maintaining that he remained available for international selection, Ronaldo’s latest announcement indicates that he has now decided to bring his Portugal career to a close.
His departure marks the end of an era for Portuguese football, with the country now expected to look towards a new generation of players to carry forward the national team’s ambitions.
