Former Ogun Central senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), barely two months after missing out on the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship election.
The former lawmaker announced her decision in a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun State APC chairman, Yemi Sanusi.
In the letter, Obasanjo cited what she described as repeated acts of disrespect by key figures within the party. She also accused APC leaders of failing to honour agreements reached during the process that produced Solomon Adeola as the party’s consensus governorship candidate.
Obasanjo had joined the APC in February and quickly signalled her intention to contest the Ogun governorship election. However, she later stepped back from the race following the party’s adoption of a consensus arrangement to select its preferred candidate.
Despite accepting the decision at the time, she expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the process was conducted. According to her, some of her supporters were allegedly subjected to unfair treatment and prevented from gaining access to the venue where the consensus meeting took place.
Her resignation marks a significant political development within the Ogun APC, especially given her political profile as the daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and her previous representation of Ogun Central in the Senate.
The latest move is expected to generate fresh political discussions in Ogun State as preparations gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship election. Political observers will be watching closely to see whether Obasanjo aligns with another political platform or pursues a different path in the state’s evolving political landscape.
