Nigerian music star Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has responded strongly to criticism from a social media user who questioned why he is still actively making music at his age.
The controversy began on X when a user suggested that the singer, whom they described as being close to 50 years old, should consider stepping away from the music industry and retire from performing.
The comment quickly sparked reactions online, with media personality Oladotun Ojuolape Kayode, known professionally as Do2tun, coming to Mr P’s defence. Do2tun argued that age has never prevented successful entertainers from continuing their careers, citing internationally renowned performers such as Celine Dion, Shakira, Beyoncé, Busta Rhymes, Bruce Springsteen and Lionel Richie, who remain active on the global stage despite their ages.
Joining the discussion, Mr P thanked Do2tun for speaking up on his behalf and dismissed the criticism as another attempt to undermine his achievements. According to the singer, detractors have repeatedly changed their narratives over the years. He noted that critics once claimed he lacked vocal ability, insisted he was only a dancer, and questioned his talent. Now, he said, those same critics have shifted their focus to his age after previous criticisms failed to gain traction.
The former P-Square member also argued that Nigerian entertainers are often judged differently from their international counterparts. He pointed to performers such as Usher, Beyoncé and Chris Brown, noting that they continue to receive praise for delivering energetic performances similar to those he presents on stage.
Mr P further suggested that some critics remain unhappy about the breakup of P-Square, one of Nigeria’s most successful music groups. However, he maintained that he has no regrets about pursuing a solo career and remains confident in the path he has chosen.
In a major revelation, the singer disclosed that he recently secured a multi-million-dollar agreement with an international music distribution company. The deal, which spans five years and covers three albums, represents a significant milestone in his solo career.
Emphasising his satisfaction with his decision to go independent, Mr P described his solo journey as one of the most rewarding choices he has made, insisting that his career continues to thrive despite ongoing criticism.
