England and Ghana will lock horns on Tuesday in one of the most anticipated matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, with both sides chasing a place in the Round of 32.
The two unbeaten teams head into the crucial Group L encounter knowing that another victory could significantly boost their chances of progressing to the knockout rounds of the expanded tournament.
England arrive full of confidence after a thrilling 4-2 win over Croatia in their opening match, while Ghana secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Panama to begin their campaign on a positive note.
The Three Lions showcased their attacking quality against Croatia, with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford all getting on the scoresheet in an impressive display.
England midfielder Declan Rice believes the team’s second-half performance in that match should serve as the standard going forward.
“We know as players the level, we know what’s required, and that second-half performance was probably the benchmark for us in terms of having to start the game at that level,” Rice said.
“We believe that if we can do that from the opening minute, with the players that we also have to come on and finish the game, we can beat any opponent in the world.”
England manager Thomas Tuchel also received a major boost ahead of the game after confirming that Bukayo Saka has recovered from the Achilles issue that limited him recently.
“Bukayo is getting better and better. He feels no more pain,” Tuchel said.
Ghana, meanwhile, are preparing for what could be their biggest test of the tournament so far.
Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz insisted his players are motivated rather than intimidated by the challenge of facing one of the competition’s favourites.
“This is the easiest type of match, because when you’re about to play against England, France or Germany, you don’t need to say anything to the players,” Queiroz said.
“We know they have the three lions on their shirt, but we come from Ghana and have 33 million lions to fight for this game.”
The West African side will also be strengthened by the return of midfielder Thomas Partey, who missed the victory over Panama.
While England are widely regarded as favourites, Ghana’s disciplined defensive display in their opening match suggests they could make life difficult for the European giants.
With qualification to the knockout stage potentially on the line, football fans can expect a fiercely contested battle when both nations meet at Gillette Stadium in Houston.
Kick-off is scheduled for 9:00pm Nigerian time.
