The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, June 17, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the 1448 After Hijrah (AH) Islamic New Year.
The announcement was made in an official statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya.
According to the statement, the work-free day was approved to enable residents of the state to observe and celebrate the significance of the Islamic lunar new year, which begins with the sighting of the crescent moon of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf congratulated Muslims in Kano State and across Nigeria for witnessing another Islamic New Year, describing the occasion as an opportunity for spiritual reflection and renewal.
He urged members of the Muslim Ummah and the general public to use the period to assess their actions over the past year and recommit themselves to values that promote peace and unity.
“The Governor calls on the people of the state and the Muslim Ummah to reflect on their actions over the past year and to use the occasion to offer special prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity for the state and the country at large,” the statement read.
Governor Yusuf also encouraged residents to pray for continued peace, stability and economic progress in Kano State and Nigeria, especially amid the challenges currently facing the nation.
He stressed the importance of collective prayers and support for the country’s leaders as they navigate economic and security concerns affecting millions of Nigerians.
The governor further reassured citizens of his administration’s commitment to improving their welfare through people-oriented policies and developmental projects.
According to him, the state government remains focused on implementing programmes aimed at enhancing living standards, expanding infrastructure and strengthening social welfare initiatives for the benefit of residents.
The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of a new lunar calendar year and commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, an event known as the Hijrah.
Muslims around the world often observe the occasion through prayers, reflection and acts of charity while seeking divine guidance and blessings for the year ahead.
The Kano State Government wished residents a peaceful and spiritually fulfilling celebration and urged them to continue promoting harmony and mutual understanding within their communities.
