Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced a statewide restriction on the operations of commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as okada operators, as part of efforts to improve security across the state.
Under the new directive, commercial motorcycle operators will no longer be allowed to operate between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
The governor disclosed the measure while addressing concerns over ongoing efforts to secure the release of abducted victims in the state.
Makinde assured residents that the government remains committed to ensuring the safe return of those still being held captive by kidnappers.
“We have not forgotten them, and we have not abandoned them,” the governor stated.
He explained that security operations are ongoing but noted that certain details cannot be made public due to the sensitive nature of the rescue efforts.
“ We may not be able to disclose every step being taken because of the sensitive nature of the operations involved, but I ask our people not to mistake our silence for inaction. A great deal of work is being done behind the scenes, and we remain fully engaged with all relevant security agencies,” he said.
Announcing the new security measure, Makinde stated:
“Consequently, the operations of commercial motorcycle operators, formerly known as Okada riders, will now be restricted between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. throughout Oyo State.”
The governor emphasized that the decision forms part of broader efforts to curb criminal activities and enhance public safety across the state.
He also called on residents to support security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious movements or activities within their communities.
According to Makinde, security remains a collective responsibility that requires cooperation between government, security operatives and citizens.
The announcement comes amid heightened security concerns in Oyo State following recent kidnappings and attacks in parts of the state, particularly in communities within Oriire Local Government Area.
Authorities say the restriction is intended to strengthen surveillance, limit the movement of criminal elements during late-night hours and support ongoing security operations aimed at restoring peace and protecting lives and property.
