The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting that electricity tariffs will soon be increased, stating that there are currently no plans to raise tariffs for any category of consumers connected to the national grid.
The clarification was made in an official statement shared on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure in the Office of the Vice President, Sadiq Wanka, following media reports that interpreted his earlier remarks as an indication of an imminent tariff review.
According to Wanka, the reports misrepresented comments he made during a presentation at the Asharami Square 3.0event held in Lagos on July 22, 2026, where he spoke about investment opportunities in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
He explained that his presentation focused on the Federal Government’s long-term reforms aimed at attracting private investment across the electricity value chain and did not announce or propose any increase in electricity tariffs.
“There is no planned tariff hike for any grid consumer across any service band. The government remains committed to protecting vulnerable households through continued tariff support.
“The Special Adviser’s comments were made during a presentation at the Asharami Square 3.0 event, where he addressed investment opportunities in the power sector and how the Federal Government’s reform programme has opened new avenues for investors across the power value chain,” the statement read.
Wanka also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to implementing the National Integrated Electricity Policy, which was finalised in December 2024 and approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in May 2025.
According to him, the policy remains the framework guiding reforms in Nigeria’s electricity sector, with the government maintaining its commitment to improving power infrastructure while continuing tariff support for vulnerable households.
The clarification comes amid public concern following reports suggesting that another electricity tariff increase was imminent. The Federal Government has, however, maintained that no tariff hike has been approved or is being planned for any category of electricity consumers at this time.
