The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu will soon announce a fresh salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces as part of efforts to improve their welfare.
The development was contained in a statement issued by the minister’s media aide, Leah Katung-Babatunde, who said the planned salary review reflects the Federal Government’s continued commitment to rewarding the sacrifices of military personnel.
According to the statement, the proposed increase forms part of broader measures aimed at enhancing the welfare and morale of troops engaged in defending the country.
General Musa recalled that during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the monthly salary of soldiers was increased from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000, describing the adjustment as a significant milestone in improving the welfare of personnel.
He added that the government is now working to secure another upward review.
“I want to state here that a few weeks ago, I mentioned that soldiers are now receiving ₦100,000. When I was Chief of Defence Staff, soldiers were receiving ₦49,000.
“About two years ago, I pushed for an increase to ₦100,000, and that was achieved. We are, however, making further efforts to increase it again,” Musa said.
The Defence Minister did not disclose the proposed new salary structure or indicate when the adjustment would take effect, but said President Tinubu would make the official announcement in due course.
The planned pay review comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen the operational capacity of the Armed Forces through improved welfare, better equipment and enhanced support for personnel involved in counter-insurgency and other security operations across the country.
