The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has thrown its weight behind Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an independent United Nations (UN) investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The party said an international investigation would help establish the facts surrounding the incident, strengthen public confidence in the ongoing probe and ensure accountability for everyone involved.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC described the circumstances surrounding the abduction as serious enough to warrant an impartial and transparent investigation.
According to the party, a UN-backed inquiry would help uncover the truth and deliver justice to the victims and their families.
The statement noted that the party fully supports Governor Makinde’s appeal for an independent investigation, insisting that the objective is not political but to ensure that every question surrounding the kidnapping is answered through a credible process trusted by Nigerians.
“The safety and security of Nigerian children should never become a subject of political disagreement or speculation,” the statement said.
The NDC urged the Federal Government to embrace every legitimate effort aimed at uncovering the truth, strengthening confidence in the country’s security institutions and preventing similar incidents in the future.
According to the party, the lives of Nigerian children deserve the highest level of accountability, adding that an independent investigation would not only clarify the circumstances surrounding the abduction but also reinforce public trust in Nigeria’s security and justice systems.
Governor Makinde had earlier appealed to the United Nations and other international human rights and accountability bodies to investigate the Oriire school abduction, arguing that the incident was sufficiently grave and unusual to require independent international scrutiny.
The governor said such an inquiry would help establish the facts, identify any institutional failures and reassure Nigerians that everyone found responsible, regardless of status or position, would be held accountable.
The Oriire school kidnapping has continued to generate nationwide attention, with renewed calls for stronger security around schools and greater protection for pupils, teachers and communities vulnerable to kidnapping attacks.
