Former Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh has criticised Brazil’s performance following the South American side’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the team has lost the identity and style that once made it one of football’s most feared nations.
Oliseh made the remarks after Brazil suffered a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the quarter-finals at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.
The victory secured a historic place in the World Cup semi-finals for Norway for the first time, with striker Erling Haaland producing a match-winning performance.
Brazil’s difficult night began when Bruno Guimarães missed an early penalty. Although Carlo Ancelotti’s side created several scoring opportunities before the break, Gabriel Martinelli and Vinícius Júnior were repeatedly denied by Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, who delivered an outstanding display.
Norway grew into the contest in the second half and eventually took the lead in the 79th minute through Haaland, who headed home from close range. The Manchester City striker sealed the win in the 90th minute with a powerful long-range strike, leaving Brazil unable to recover despite pulling a goal back late in the game.
Reacting to the result on social media, Oliseh questioned Brazil’s tactical organisation and the players’ mentality, arguing that the current squad no longer reflects the quality and flair traditionally associated with the five-time world champions.
“Erling Haaland’s second goal tells you everything you need to know. Look at the tactical shape, look at the body language. The Brazil we used to know is completely gone. This Brazil side is sadly and completely playing ordinary. Bravo Norway. This World Cup continues to amaze!” Oliseh wrote.
Brazil’s exit marks one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Norway’s impressive victory has strengthened its hopes of challenging for the title as the tournament enters the semi-final stage.
