Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 presidential election will be his final attempt to become Nigeria’s president.
Atiku made the declaration during a Facebook Live session while discussing his political ambitions and plans ahead of the next presidential election.
The former vice president has contested the Nigerian presidency several times over the past decades and is now preparing to run under the platform of the ADC after securing the party’s presidential ticket.
Speaking about his future political plans, Atiku said he would not seek the presidency again after the 2027 election, regardless of whether he wins or loses.
“Whether I win or lose, 2027 will be my last time contesting for the presidency,” he said.
The declaration could mark the final stage of Atiku’s long-running presidential ambition.
Atiku served as Nigeria’s vice president from 1999 to 2007 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Since leaving office, he has remained a major figure in Nigerian politics and has contested presidential elections under different political platforms, including the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
His decision to contest under the ADC in 2027 comes as opposition parties work to consolidate their political strength ahead of the election.
During the same Facebook Live session, Atiku also revisited his allegations concerning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s academic credentials.
The ADC candidate maintained his position that questions surrounding Tinubu’s certificates should be properly addressed.
“I was the one who raised the issue surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s academic certificates, and I stand by my position that there was forgery,” Atiku said.
He added that he considered it unacceptable for questions surrounding the academic qualifications of a sitting Nigerian president to remain unresolved.
