Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle United for the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães.
According to French outlet L’Equipe, both clubs have agreed on the framework of a deal worth £77 million, with additional performance related bonuses.
Although the transfer has not yet been formally completed, the report claims negotiations are at an advanced stage and the move is now close to being finalised.
Newcastle had been determined to keep hold of their captain despite already losing key players, including Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, during the current transfer window.
However, Arsenal are said to have intensified their pursuit, eventually reaching a breakthrough in talks.
The report also claims Guimarães informed Newcastle’s hierarchy several weeks ago of his desire to leave the club.
The Brazil international further fueled speculation after he did not travel with the rest of Newcastle’s squad to their pre season training camp in La Manga on Friday.
His potential departure would mark another major setback for the Magpies following the recent exit of former manager Eddie Howe, a development that reportedly disappointed many supporters.
Meanwhile, Guimarães’ former club, Lyon, are expected to benefit financially from the transfer.
According to L’Equipe, the French club would receive more than €8 million through a sell on clause included in the midfielder’s transfer agreement when he joined Newcastle.
