The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a woman, Sadiat Yunusa, for allegedly strangling her co-wife’s three year old daughter to death in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
The State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, disclosed the development while briefing journalists in Ilorin on Friday, July 31, 2026, on recent operational successes recorded by the command.
According to the police, the incident was reported at the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters on July 25, 2026.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, identified as Ummaiyat, had been left in the care of a family member while her mother went to Kaiama Central Market.
Police alleged that during that period, the suspect lured the child away to a nearby farm settlement, where she allegedly strangled her to death.
The Commissioner of Police said swift investigative efforts led to Yunusa’s arrest.
According to Ojo, the suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation.
“Prompt investigative efforts led to the arrest of the suspect, who, during interrogation, voluntarily confessed to the commission of the offence,” the police commissioner said.
Police said the suspect claimed her actions were driven by resentment and jealousy stemming from a prolonged domestic dispute.
According to the commissioner, Yunusa alleged that her husband had neglected her and her three children in favour of his second wife.
“She disclosed that the act was motivated by resentment and jealousy arising from a prolonged domestic dispute, alleging that her husband had neglected her and her three children in favour of his second wife,” Ojo stated.
The police said investigations into the incident are ongoing, after which the suspect is expected to be charged in court.
