The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, has raised the alarm over an attempted unauthorised compromise of its official X account.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.
Uba said the incident was being treated as a cybersecurity matter, with appropriate technical measures activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.
He said efforts were ongoing to fully restore control of the official account.
The Defence Headquarters therefore urged members of the public, media organisations and other stakeholders to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content that may be posted from the account while the security measures remain in place.
“Members of the public are advised to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content that may be posted from the account during this period,” the statement said.
The military authorities assured Nigerians that they remained committed to maintaining high standards of information security and providing accurate and credible information about the activities and operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The DHQ also advised Nigerians to remain vigilant and rely on its verified communication channels on other platforms, including Defence Headquarters Nigeria on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp Channel, while efforts to secure the X account continue.
The incident comes as the Nigerian military increasingly relies on social media platforms to communicate information about military operations, security developments and other official activities.
The Defence Headquarters said it would provide further updates as necessary and thanked the public for its understanding and vigilance.
