FAAN Says Smoke at Lagos Airport Was From Fire Suppression System, Not Fire

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, contrary to earlier reports.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.

According to the authority, preliminary findings showed that the smoke observed inside the terminal was caused by the activation of the facility’s FM-200 fire suppression system rather than an actual fire.

“Further to our earlier advisory regarding the incident at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to provide the following update.

“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system.”

FAAN said investigations are ongoing to determine what triggered the activation of the fire suppression system.

The authority also confirmed that normal operations have resumed at the terminal following the incident.

“The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated. Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal.”

While assuring passengers and other airport users of their safety, FAAN reiterated its commitment to maintaining secure and efficient airport operations.

“While detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident, FAAN appreciates the understanding and cooperation of passengers, airlines, airport users and all stakeholders, and reiterates its commitment to the safety and security of all airport operations,” the statement added.
