A student of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, identified as Somina, has survived a gunshot attack on the university campus amid tension linked to an alleged clash between rival cult groups.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, during the university’s ongoing Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week and Jean Carnival activities.
Somina, who was reportedly a 100-level student, sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and was subsequently rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Sources said medical personnel began efforts to remove bullet pellets from his body, while further treatment was provided.
Despite the severity of the incident, Somina survived the shooting.
Reports circulating among students suggested that there was no clear evidence that the victim belonged to any cult group.
Some student sources reportedly said members of the KK group had confirmed that Somina was not one of their members.
Other accounts suggested that he could have been hit by a stray bullet during the confrontation, while some reports speculated that he may have been targeted because of the way he was dressed or the people he was with.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear as security agencies continue their investigation.
The incident reportedly occurred against the backdrop of tension involving rival groups identified in reports as Vikings/DNKI and KK/Clansmen.
The groups were reportedly involved in a clash on the campus as activities marking the SUG Week and Jean Carnival continued from Monday, August 10.
The Rivers State Police Command had earlier confirmed a cult-related shooting on the university campus and said its personnel responded to restore calm.
Police authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the latest shooting and determine whether it was connected to the reported cult clash.
Following the violence, the university management suspended the remaining SUG Week activities.
Students were also directed to return to normal academic activities from Thursday, August 13.
Videos showing the injured student being carried away from the scene, as well as footage of earlier gunshots on the campus, have circulated widely across social media.
