Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has criticised singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, over his public comments regarding his elder brother and former manager, Jude Okoye, describing them as an attempt to conduct a “social media trial” while court proceedings are still ongoing.
Effiong, who previously represented Jude Okoye in the matter, said Peter’s continued public statements could undermine the judicial process, stressing that the case remains before courts of competent jurisdiction.
According to the lawyer, Jude has not been convicted of any offence and is therefore entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence.
He also expressed concern that Peter, whom he described as the nominal complainant in the two pending criminal cases, has continued to use social media to shape public opinion while the legal process is yet to be concluded.
Lawyer alleges contradiction
Effiong further claimed that the narrative Peter has been promoting online differs from statements he allegedly made under oath during cross-examination in court.
According to him, Peter’s public comments contradict admissions he made while testifying in the ongoing proceedings.
The lawyer maintained that issues before the court should be resolved through the judicial process rather than through public opinion on social media.
His comments come amid the prolonged legal dispute involving the former Psquare members and their elder brother, a matter that has continued to attract widespread public attention.
