A man living with HIV has opened up about his life before his diagnosis, revealing that years of risky sexual behaviour and unprotected encounters preceded the discovery of his status.
Speaking during a podcast interview, the man disclosed that he has been living with HIV for nine years and decided to share his experience to raise awareness about the importance of sexual health and regular testing.
Reflecting on his past lifestyle, he admitted that he frequently sought casual sexual encounters whenever he travelled and paid little attention to the potential health consequences.
“I’m HIV positive and I’ve been living with HIV for nine years,” he said.
He continued:
“I was the kind of guy that if I go to any state for the first time, the first thing I want to ask is the closest brothel. I just wanted to sleep with anybody.”
The man also spoke about what he described as compulsive sexual behaviour, saying it affected different aspects of his daily life.
“Wherever I find myself, I could masturbate. I mean even inside the church.”
He claimed he would sometimes become sexually aroused during church services and excuse himself to the restroom. He also alleged that some older church members introduced him to a nightclub after an all-night programme during his teenage years.
During the interview, the podcast host asked whether sex workers had ever refused to have sex without a condom.
Responding, the man said only a few insisted on protection.
“Very few.”
He added:
“The power of demanding for protection as a woman is usually lost when you are paid for intimacy.”
The man displayed his antiretroviral medication during the conversation and revealed that he only decided to undergo an HIV test after experiencing persistent health challenges.
“I was experiencing a series of symptoms before I checked. I was experiencing diarrhoea and fever.”
He also cautioned against judging a person’s HIV status based on appearance, stressing that anyone can be affected regardless of how healthy they look.
To illustrate his point, he recounted the case of a married woman who, according to him, tested positive during a routine medical examination while her husband was reportedly unaware of her status.
The interview has sparked conversations online about HIV awareness, safe sexual practices, routine testing, and the importance of reducing stigma toward people living with the virus.
