The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that it did not freeze all bank accounts belonging to the Osun State Government, stating that only one account was placed under temporary restriction following the detection of suspicious financial activities.
The clarification was made on Thursday by the EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show.
According to Uwujaren, the anti-graft agency acted after observing what it described as suspicious transactions involving the account within the past week.
“EFCC placed a temporary restriction on one Osun State government account after observing suspicious activities in the past week.
“This does not mean all Osun State accounts are frozen, only the targeted one. EFCC has the power to issue such temporary restrictions.”
The clarification comes amid controversy surrounding the restriction placed on the account just days before the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
Earlier reports had suggested that the EFCC froze the state government’s accounts, prompting allegations from Governor Ademola Adeleke, who described the move as politically motivated and aimed at disrupting government activities ahead of the election.
However, the commission has maintained that the action was limited to a single account and was taken as part of its statutory responsibility to investigate suspected financial irregularities.
The EFCC had also previously stated that the restriction was intended to prevent the alleged diversion of public fundswhile investigations continue.
The development has continued to generate political reactions, with the Osun State Government and the EFCC maintaining differing positions over the legality and timing of the agency’s action.
