Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has responded to remarks made by Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, over the forthcoming Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
Davido, whose uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking a second term in office, recently appealed to an unnamed politician from Imo State to stay away from the Osun election and allow residents to decide the outcome through a free and credible voting process.
Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, August 5, the singer claimed he had received reports that a politician from Imo intended to influence the election for political reasons. Although he did not identify the individual by name, Davido urged the person to embrace peace and avoid actions capable of undermining the democratic process.
Reacting to the comments, Governor Uzodimma, through his Senior Special Assistant on Electronic and Creative Media, Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, dismissed the appeal and advised Davido to focus his message on Osun voters instead.
According to the statement, the governor argued that the outcome of the election would be determined solely by the electorate and not by political narratives. He maintained that many residents of Osun State were dissatisfied with the performance of Governor Ademola Adeleke and were prepared to support a different candidate in the governorship poll.
The statement further claimed there were growing indications that voters across the state were leaning towards the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressing confidence that the ruling party would emerge victorious in the election.
In a remark directed at the music star, the governor’s aide said Davido should begin preparing his uncle for life after office if he loses the election. The statement also suggested, in a light-hearted jab, that the singer could consider making Adeleke a dancer in his music crew should he no longer hold political office after the August 15 governorship election.
The exchange adds to the growing political tension ahead of the Osun governorship election, with both supporters of the incumbent administration and opposition figures intensifying public campaigns as voters prepare to head to the polls.
