Two people have been confirmed dead after a man armed with a machete and knife attacked security personnel at the IMAX cinema in Lekki, Lagos State, on Friday night, August 29, 2026.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred when the unidentified man, who was reportedly behaving erratically and was suspected to be under the influence of drugs, attempted to gain entry into the cinema premises.
Security guards at the facility reportedly stopped him from entering, after which he allegedly attacked them with the weapons.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying the suspect allegedly stabbed one security guard to death and injured another.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, said the attacker appeared to be a destitute person.
According to the police, the suspect was subsequently mobbed and killed following the attack.
The incident therefore resulted in the deaths of the alleged attacker and one of the security guards.
The injured security guard was reportedly taken for medical attention, although details about his condition were not immediately available.
The police have also taken the cinema’s Chief Security Officer into custody as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities are working to obtain and review CCTV footage from the cinema premises to establish exactly what happened and determine whether any other persons were involved.
The police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s identity, motive and what led to the confrontation with the security guards remain unclear as investigators continue their inquiry.
The incident has caused concern among residents and visitors to the Lekki area, with authorities expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
