Tears flowed in Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday as the remains of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, were laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
Family members, friends, colleagues and sympathisers gathered in the actor’s hometown to pay their final respects to the 66-year-old Yoruba film star.
A video from the funeral procession showed mourners carrying Ogogo’s remains to his final resting place, with an emotional atmosphere surrounding the burial.
Ogogo’s close friend and colleague, Yinka Quadri, was visibly overcome with grief and was seen crying uncontrollably as those around him tried to console him.
Several prominent actors from the Yoruba film industry also attended the burial, including Jide Kosoko, Faithia Balogun, Femi Adebayo, Mr Latin, Toyosi Adesanya, Ireti Osayemi and Bisi Omo Logbalogba.
Actor Bola Oyin-Adejobi also paid tribute to Ogogo while speaking with journalists before the burial and prayed for the late actor to attain Al-Jannah Firdaus.
Ogogo’s burial took place a day after his remains were taken to Ilaro following his death on Sunday.
Veteran actor Jide Kosoko had announced Ogogo’s death on Instagram, stating that the actor died at 3pm on Sunday at the age of 66. He also disclosed that the remains would be taken to Ilaro for a lying-in-state ceremony and burial.
The Ilaro Muslim Community subsequently announced the burial prayer for the veteran actor.
Ogogo’s death came days after his daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, appealed for medical assistance for their father, who had been battling stage-four cancer.
Kaira had disclosed that doctors told the family that chemotherapy could no longer be administered because of his condition, leading them to seek alternative treatment options.
The veteran actor was one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba-language cinema. His career spanned more than four decades, during which he featured in hundreds of films and earned a lasting reputation within the Nigerian film industry.
