The African Democratic Congress, ADC, vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged Nigerians not to re-elect President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that the country’s economic hardship could worsen under his administration.
Amaechi made the statement during a meeting with stakeholders in Obigwe, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he also called on supporters to strengthen the party’s grassroots structure ahead of the election.
The former Rivers State governor criticised the Tinubu administration over the removal of the petrol subsidy, arguing that the policy had increased the hardship faced by Nigerians.
“Tinubu removed the fuel subsidy, and since he removed the subsidy, have we rested? Are you not suffering? Are they not killing people here?”
Amaechi also highlighted some of the policies he claimed to have implemented while serving as governor of Rivers State, including spending on infrastructure, education and healthcare.
“I was a governor, and when I saw that there was crime, I brought out money to spend on the society. I paid contractors, I gave you free education, I built new schools, I gave you free healthcare.”
He accused successive administrations of abandoning some of those initiatives and alleged that public funds were being diverted to the detriment of Nigerians.
Amaechi also compared the economic positions of the presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 election, particularly the proposal by Atiku Abubakar to restore fuel and electricity subsidies.
According to him, Atiku had promised to return the petrol subsidy if elected, which he argued could reduce fuel prices and ease the cost of living.
“Atiku said if you vote for him and he wins, he would bring back subsidy. If he brings back subsidy, the price of fuel would come down. He would bring back electricity subsidy.”
Amaechi argued that lower energy costs could also ease pressure on households and businesses by reducing the cost of essential commodities.
He then presented voters with what he described as a choice between continuing with Tinubu’s policies and supporting Atiku.
“So you have a choice to either vote for Tinubu and die of poverty or vote Atiku and make money.”
The ADC chieftain also urged party members to recruit more supporters and build a strong grassroots structure ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Amaechi’s remarks come as opposition parties intensify mobilisation and political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the ADC positioning itself as an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
