Former Kogi Governor Ibrahim Idris Dies at 77 in UK

Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has died at the age of 77.

Idris reportedly died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, in the United Kingdom. The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.

Following news of his death, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Governor Yahaya Bello, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Abdullahi Bello, and other senior government officials visited the deceased’s residence in Abuja to condole with his family.

The visit was disclosed by Onogwu Muhammed, Special Adviser to Governor Ododo on Public Relations and Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Yahaya Bello, in a Facebook post on Sunday.

“Kogi State Governor, His Excellency Ahmed Usman Ododo; former Governor Yahaya Bello, CON; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Abdullahi Bello; and other top government officials have arrived at the Abuja residence of the late former Governor Ibrahim Idris, who passed away this afternoon.”

Idris served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2012, making him one of the longest-serving governors in the state’s history.

He was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2003 and assumed office on May 29 that year. His 2007 re-election was later nullified following a legal challenge, after which he returned to office through a re-run election in March 2008. He continued as governor until January 2012.

He was succeeded by Idris Wada, who took office in January 2012.

Before entering politics, Idris was a businessman with interests including furniture manufacturing, construction and hospitality. He later studied Law at the University of Abuja.

His death has already attracted tributes from political figures in Kogi State.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, also mourned the former governor, describing him as a significant figure in the political history of Kogi State and the PDP.

Further details about his death and burial arrangements are expected from his family.
