The defamation lawsuit filed by Nollywood actress Judy Austin against her former husband, Emmanuel Obasi, has been adjourned by the High Court in Abuja to November 24.
Judy instituted the legal action in July, seeking N1 billion in general damages over alleged defamatory publications attributed to Obasi.
In her suit, the actress asked the court to order Obasi to issue a full and unconditional retraction and apology through at least two widely circulated national newspapers and his social media platforms.
She also requested an injunction preventing Obasi, his agents or representatives from publishing further statements she considers defamatory against her.
Among the other reliefs sought by Judy are an order directing Obasi to remove alleged defamatory posts concerning her from his social media accounts.
The actress is also seeking N500 million in aggravated damages and another N500 million in exemplary damages over the alleged publications.
Court documents further show that Judy requested N100 million as the cost of prosecuting the suit, with another N100 million listed as the cost of the action.
The matter came up before the Abuja High Court for hearing on Monday.
Following the proceedings, Obasi disclosed in a social media post that the case had been adjourned until November 24.
He also stated that his legal team had filed a case challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the defamation suit.
The jurisdictional challenge is expected to be considered as the legal proceedings continue.
The dispute between Judy Austin and Emmanuel Obasi has attracted public attention, particularly because of the actress’s subsequent marriage to actor Yul Edochie and the controversies surrounding their relationship.
