The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Inspector Osumah Frank after a viral video showed him making political and ethnic remarks about Peter Obi and the possibility of an Igbo person becoming President of Nigeria.
The command said on Friday that it had commenced disciplinary action against the officer in line with established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
In the video circulated on social media, Frank, who was wearing police uniform, was heard making comments about Obi’s political ambition and saying that an Igbo person could not become President of Nigeria.
The video also contained other political remarks involving President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, according to reports.
The Lagos Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, identified the officer as Osumah Frank and said his comments were made in his personal capacity.
The command stressed that the remarks did not represent its official position or that of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Command has commenced appropriate disciplinary action against the officer in line with established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Adebisi said the command considered the remarks inappropriate and reiterated that police officers are expected to maintain professionalism and respect for members of the public.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, also reminded personnel that wearing the police uniform carries responsibilities beyond their personal views.
“All personnel are expected to maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public at all times.”
Fatai said officers must uphold the dignity and integrity of the police and warned that conduct capable of damaging public confidence in the Force would not be tolerated.
The command did not disclose the specific disciplinary measures that would be imposed on Frank.
The development comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Peter Obi among the declared presidential candidates.
The Nigeria Police Force has previously stated that its personnel are subject to internal disciplinary procedures for misconduct. The Force’s official materials also provide for disciplinary handling of complaints involving police officers.
The Lagos Command said it remained committed to professionalism, accountability and maintaining public confidence in the police.
