The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal, with 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent of those who sat for the examination, obtaining five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, announced the results on Thursday at a press conference in Minna, Niger State.
The results were released 63 days after the final paper of the examination was written.
Wushishi said 1,378,048 candidates registered for the 2026 SSCE Internal, while 1,371,992 candidates eventually sat for the examination.
The examination was conducted between June 15 and July 23, 2026.
According to the NECO registrar, 1,162,118 candidates, representing 84.70 per cent, obtained five credits and above when performance in English Language and Mathematics was not used as a condition.
The figures mean that the proportion of candidates meeting the five-credit benchmark falls significantly when both English Language and Mathematics are required.
Wushishi also announced a substantial reduction in examination malpractice recorded during the 2026 exercise.
He said 1,406 candidates were involved in various forms of examination malpractice, compared with 3,878 candidates recorded in 2025.
This represents a 64.74 per cent decline in the number of candidates involved in examination malpractice.
The NECO boss attributed the improvement to measures taken to strengthen the integrity of the examination and commended security agencies for their support throughout the exercise.
He specifically acknowledged the contributions of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) for maintaining vigilance and providing security during the examination.
According to Wushishi, the presence and support of the security agencies helped reinforce discipline, deter examination malpractice and protect the credibility of the examination process.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for reappointing him for a second tenure as NECO registrar.
Wushishi thanked the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, for the confidence placed in his leadership of the examination body.
The registrar reassured candidates, parents, schools and other stakeholders that NECO would continue to strengthen its examination processes and uphold the integrity of its assessments.
Candidates who sat for the 2026 SSCE Internal can now proceed to access their results through the official NECO result-checking platform, using the required examination details.
