OPay has dismissed reports claiming that it plans to shut down its operations in Nigeria, describing the information circulating across social media as false and confirming that security agencies are investigating those behind the rumour.
The fintech company said it is working with the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Nigeria Police Force to identify the individuals responsible for creating and circulating the false information.
OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press conference organised by the company and streamed on its YouTube channel.
Rokosu said the DSS and police were among the law enforcement agencies investigating the matter and that OPay had provided evidence to assist with identifying those responsible.
“While the DSS and the Nigeria police, among the relevant law enforcement agencies, are currently and intensively investigating this matter, we are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigations being conducted and have provided the necessary evidence to identify those responsible for it,” he said.
He added that OPay had commenced legal action against individuals involved in creating and distributing the information.
“Opay is taking action against those responsible for creating and circulating this harmful information. We will pursue them and will ensure that the law is fully enforced.”
Rokosu warned that individuals who deliberately circulate similar false information could face legal consequences.
“Anyone who deliberately engages in similar conduct should expect decisive legal action and the full consequences provided by the law. This is not about silencing anyone. Opay is not going to be silenced,” he said.
Also speaking at the briefing, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, assured customers that the company remained fully operational in Nigeria.
“OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere.”
Adekunle said there was no decision by OPay to suspend or terminate its Nigerian operations, adding that the viral message did not originate from the company.
“The message that is circulating online is false. It did not come from OPay. There is no decision from OPay or by OPay to shut down its operations in Nigeria, and there is no indefinite leave.”
He pointed out that the false notice had claimed OPay would shut down from September 1, 2026, yet the company remained operational on September 2.
Adekunle urged customers to verify information through OPay’s official communication channels before taking financial decisions based on messages shared on social media or messaging platforms.
He warned that a message could be designed to look authentic through the use of copied logos and official-looking documents without actually being genuine.
The controversy followed the circulation of a viral notice on Sunday claiming that OPay would suspend its Nigerian operations from September 1, 2026.
The message reportedly advised customers to withdraw their funds to avoid losing access to their accounts, prompting concern among some users.
OPay had earlier dismissed the notice as fake and urged customers to rely on verified company communications.
The fintech company also confronted an X user, @haifah-er-abba, on Monday over a post concerning the alleged shutdown, asking the user to retract the claim and apologise.
With the DSS and police now investigating the circulation of the false notice, OPay said it would continue to pursue legal action against those found responsible.
For customers, the company’s latest position is clear: OPay remains operational in Nigeria and has no announced plan to shut down its Nigerian operations.
