The Osun State Police Command has recovered a second corpse from the premises of the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife, bringing the number of people killed in the violent incident at the park to two.
The development came a day after Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, an Accord Party chieftain and transport union figure, was shot dead during a clash at the motor park.
Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said the newly recovered body had been deposited at a morgue, while the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
“The governor has decided that the park should not operate. The park has not been operating. A corpse was also recovered by the police, and it has been deposited at the morgue.”
Ojelabi said the police were working to apprehend everyone involved in the violence and urged people being mentioned in connection with the incident to report themselves at the nearest police station instead of attempting to defend themselves on social media.
“The Commissioner of Police has promised that all those involved will be apprehended and face the law, irrespective of who they are.”
The violence erupted on Sunday at Mayfair Motor Park amid a dispute linked to the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Osun State. Governor Ademola Adeleke subsequently ordered the arrest of those responsible and directed security agencies to restore order at motor parks across the state.
The state government has also moved to reintroduce a Park Management System, with Adeleke saying an executive order would be issued to establish the new arrangement.
Emir’s remains were meanwhile buried at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo according to traditional rites.
The burial followed the release of his remains from the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. Reports said close relatives and traditional priests participated in the rites, while some of his associates remained outside during the proceedings.
There was also tension at the hospital before the remains were released. Suspected associates of the deceased allegedly attacked two hospital workers after accusing them of recording the proceedings with their phones. Additional police personnel later arrived at the facility and helped restore normalcy.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Commissioner for Transportation, Sesan Oyedele, has denied allegations that he endorsed Emir as the next state chairman of the NURTW.
Two transport union figures, Gbadagesin and Kazeem Akeem, had alleged in videos circulating online that Oyedele summoned NURTW leaders to his residence in Modakeke and told them that the state government had endorsed Emir for the union’s top position.
Oyedele rejected the claim and said the people making the allegation were not present when the issue was discussed.
According to the commissioner, the transport union members visited his residence on Sunday after previously contacting him to request a meeting. He said they told him that they had agreed among themselves that Emir should become the next NURTW chairman and asked him to support their position.
Oyedele said he told them he would present their request to Governor Adeleke, the Chief of Staff and other relevant officials after the governor returned to the state.
“It was about two hours after they left my house that I was called that Emir had been killed,” he said.
The commissioner appealed to residents to remain calm as security agencies investigate the violence.
The identity of the second person whose corpse was recovered at Mayfair Motor Park has not been publicly disclosed, and police have not yet established the circumstances surrounding that death. The investigation is ongoing.
