Senegal Goalkeeper Édouard Mendy Retires From International Football at 34 After 60 Caps

Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 34, bringing an impressive chapter of his career with the Lions of Teranga to an end.

Mendy made 60 appearances for Senegal, establishing himself as one of the country’s most important goalkeepers and one of Africa’s leading players in his position.

His biggest international achievement came at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, which was concluded in February 2022. Mendy played a key role as Senegal secured their first-ever AFCON title after defeating Egypt in the final.

The triumph marked a historic moment for Senegalese football and further strengthened Mendy’s reputation on the international stage.

Despite ending his international career, Mendy continues to receive recognition for his performances at club level. He was recently shortlisted for the 2026 Yashin Trophy, an award presented annually to honour the world’s outstanding goalkeeper.

Mendy will now concentrate on his club career with Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, following his decision to step away from the Senegal national team.

His retirement closes a notable international career that included major tournament appearances and Senegal’s historic AFCON triumph.
