Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2027 election, has said he will not travel outside Nigeria for medical treatment if elected president.
Sowore made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed his approach to public office and the changes he would seek to make if elected.
The AAC candidate said he would rather accept the consequences of an illness than seek medical treatment abroad if the condition could not be treated in Nigeria.
“Any sickness that I can’t treat in Nigeria when I become president should better kill me. I can tell you that for free.”
Sowore also said he would not create what he described as family liabilities for the country if he becomes president.
He specifically addressed the role of the president’s wife, arguing that the Office of the First Lady is not established by the Nigerian Constitution.
According to him, becoming president would not end his marriage, but his wife would not operate an official Office of the First Lady.
“There is no office of First Lady in the Nigerian Constitution. Becoming president will not abolish my marriage, but I will not have the office of First Lady.”
Sowore said women would still have a voice under his administration, but opposed the use of public resources for what he described as an unconstitutional office.
“Women will be heard, but I don’t believe that you need a First Lady who is holding an unconstitutional position and just wasting money that is meant for progress and projects.”
Sowore emerged as the AAC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election after the party’s presidential primary in Abuja in May 2026. The election will mark his third consecutive presidential contest under the party.
His latest comments come as political parties and presidential candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general election.
