The United States has publicly confirmed for the first time that it has deployed weapons capable of offensive action in orbit, citing the growing threat posed by Russia and China in space.
The US Space Force said American forces possess “on-orbit space control weapons” that can be used to defend US military assets against hostile actions by adversaries.
US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink disclosed the existence of the orbital capability during the annual Air, Space and Cyber Conference at National Harbor in Maryland. However, he declined to provide details about the type of weapon involved or explain how it operates.
A US Space Force spokesperson similarly stopped short of identifying the system, saying the weapons form part of America’s broader effort to contest and control the space domain.
According to the Space Force, space-control operations can involve both kinetic and non-kinetic capabilities designed to disrupt, affect or counter an adversary’s space-based systems. Such capabilities, it said, can be used for both defensive and offensive purposes.
The disclosure comes amid increasing concerns in Washington over the military space programmes of China and Russia, which the US considers its principal strategic competitors.
The US Space Force has previously described China as developing and operating space and counterspace capabilities as part of its military modernisation programme. Russia, meanwhile, is regarded by Washington as viewing space as another potential battlefield and considering control of the domain important to future conflicts.
The development of offensive-capable space weapons has raised concerns because attacks against satellites could have consequences far beyond military operations.
Satellites support a wide range of essential services, including weather forecasting, disaster response, communications, navigation and global positioning. Disrupting these systems could affect activities such as shipping, financial transactions, emergency services and transportation.
Long History of Military Competition in Space
Military competition in space dates back to the early years of the Cold War. Following the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik in 1957, the United States and Soviet Union began examining ways to protect their own satellites while developing capabilities that could potentially threaten those of an adversary.
Nuclear weapons in orbit were once considered one of the most serious dangers associated with the militarisation of space.
The 1967 Outer Space Treaty subsequently prohibited countries from placing nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in orbit around Earth. However, the treaty did not prohibit every form of military activity or conventional weapon system in space.
In the decades since, the United States, Russia, China, India and other nations have developed or tested technologies capable of interfering with, disabling or destroying satellites.
These counterspace capabilities can target systems that are increasingly important to modern military operations, particularly for communications, intelligence gathering, surveillance and navigation.
The latest US disclosure therefore highlights the growing strategic importance of Earth’s orbit and the increasingly competitive military environment involving Washington, Moscow and Beijing.
