Armed bandits have allegedly killed an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I Ibrahim Usman Babagiwa, and burnt his body following an attack on a surveillance team in Niger State.
The incident occurred on October 6, 2026, along the Tungan Taya-Woko axis in Borgu Local Government Area, where Babagiwa and another immigration officer were reportedly carrying out a surveillance operation when they came under attack.
The second officer, an Inspector of Immigration, sustained machete injuries but managed to escape from the attackers. He is currently stable and responding to treatment, according to the Niger State Command of the NIS.
The command confirmed the incident in a press statement dated October 12, 2026, signed by its Public Relations Officer, DSI M. Abubakar, on behalf of the Comptroller of Immigration in the state.
According to the statement, Babagiwa’s remains were discovered in a burnt state two days after the attack.
The deceased officer has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
The attack represents another reported security incident involving personnel operating in Niger State, where security agencies face challenges linked to armed criminal activity.
Despite the loss, the NIS command reaffirmed its commitment to tackling irregular migration and addressing other security challenges along Nigeria’s international border.
The statement did not provide further details about the suspected attackers or disclose whether any arrests had been made in connection with the killing.
