Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Silence on Portugal Exit, Accuses Jorge Jesus of Breaking Promises

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on his sudden departure from the national team camp, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice and saying the dispute led him to leave the squad.

Ronaldo, 41, released a lengthy statement on Tuesday explaining his version of events after leaving Portugal’s camp ahead of the Nations League fixture against Denmark.

His account comes after Jesus had publicly denied that there was any serious incident between them. Ronaldo’s latest statement provides a different account of the disagreement, with the Portugal captain saying he felt the coach had broken agreements made privately.

Ronaldo said he had originally planned to retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup, even preparing a letter to the Portuguese people for that eventual farewell.

However, he said the president of the Portuguese Football Federation persuaded him to reconsider and continue playing for Portugal.

Ronaldo also revealed that the federation president asked for his opinion on the appointment of Jesus as the new national team coach.

According to Ronaldo, he supported the choice and was pleased when Jesus was eventually appointed.

He said Jesus later met with him and presented a plan for his involvement with the national team. Ronaldo claimed the coach told him he would play the first and final matches of the international window, while his workload would be managed through substitutions.

Jesus also reportedly proposed that Ronaldo remain in Portugal rather than travel for the matches in Norway and Denmark.

Ronaldo said he rejected that proposal because he believed remaining behind would send the wrong message while he was still captain of Portugal.

He said Jesus accepted his position.

The Portugal captain then described what happened during the match against Norway as the first major breach of trust.

According to Ronaldo, he had been told before the camp that he was not expected to play in Norway and would instead feature in the later match at the Dragão.

However, on the day of the Norway match, Ronaldo said an assistant approached him during lunch and told him that Jesus wanted to know whether he was fit enough to play 30 minutes.

Ronaldo said he agreed and was subsequently told to prepare to enter the game.

He warmed up from half-time but was ultimately not brought onto the pitch.

“The coach had broken his word to me.”

Ronaldo said he was frustrated after the match and acknowledged that he made a mistake by failing to greet the Portuguese supporters.

He apologised to the fans and anyone who had travelled to see him.

Forty-eight hours later, Ronaldo said he met with Jesus and Simão Coutinho, Al Nassr’s sporting director, to discuss what had happened.

According to Ronaldo, the three men had a frank discussion and agreed that Jesus would explain the situation during a press conference.

Ronaldo said the coach was expected to acknowledge that he had proposed the original playing plan, that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time and that it had been a mistake to send him out to warm up without eventually bringing him into the match.

He said Jesus also promised to explain that he wanted Ronaldo to remain part of the national team.

Ronaldo said he accepted the arrangement and expected the matter to be resolved.

However, he claimed that Jesus’ subsequent press conference did not reflect what had been agreed privately.

Instead, Ronaldo said he heard comments and an aggressive tone that were completely different from the conversation they had held.

“It was the second time he had broken his word to me.”

Ronaldo said he therefore decided to leave the training camp rather than wait for what he described as another possible breach of trust.

He also apologised to his Portugal teammates for leaving the camp but said he believed remaining with the group after losing trust in the coach would have been harmful to the team.

“For me the truth is still the most important thing in the relationship between people. However much it hurts, let them tell me the truth.”

Ronaldo said he had even told the Portuguese Football Federation president and Jesus that if they no longer wanted him in the national team, they should simply tell him.

According to him, both rejected the suggestion and maintained that his place was still in the squad.

The Portugal captain also accepted that his decision to leave the camp could result in disciplinary action.

He said the Portuguese Football Federation should punish him if it considered his actions to have violated the rules, adding that his status as captain should not exempt him from consequences.

“I am not just any player; I am team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor.”

Despite the controversy, Ronaldo made clear that he has not retired from international football.

He said he remains available for Portugal after serving any suspension that may be imposed, provided he remains physically fit and continues playing for his club.

“If I am physically well, playing for my club, with goals I hope, after serving the suspension that may be applied to me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team.”

Ronaldo also dismissed speculation that his next appearance for Portugal should simply be a farewell match.

He said there would be time for farewell games, but insisted that his priority remains competing for the national team.

“When I think of the national team, what I really think of is competing.”

Ronaldo’s account differs from Jesus’ earlier public explanation of the incident. The Portugal coach had said there was “no incident whatsoever” and explained that he had decided not to bring Ronaldo on against Norway after initially considering using him as a substitute.

The Portuguese Football Federation has not publicly endorsed Ronaldo’s version of the private discussions described in his statement.

For now, Ronaldo has confirmed that his departure from the camp was not an announcement of international retirement, leaving the door open for his return to Portugal once any disciplinary matter has been resolved.
