Former Manchester United defender Danny Simpson believes Cristiano Ronaldo has the qualities required to become a successful football manager when he eventually retires from professional football.
Simpson, who played alongside Ronaldo during the Portuguese forward’s second spell at Manchester United, said the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s high standards, leadership qualities and understanding of the game could help him transition into management.
Speaking to GOAL, Simpson said Ronaldo’s approach to football and the expectations he sets for himself and his teammates suggest he could be suited to a coaching role.
“It would be interesting, Ronaldo as manager, but I think the way he speaks, the way he is, his standards, what he expects, especially when he came back to United,” Simpson said.
He added that Ronaldo could develop into a top manager if he applies himself to studying the tactical and technical aspects of the game.
“I think he’s got it in him to be a top manager and know the game and study the game. It would be interesting to see him,” Simpson added.
Ronaldo, who currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, has yet to confirm whether he intends to pursue management after ending his playing career.
The Portugal captain has previously spoken about his future beyond football, while speculation about his retirement has continued as he approaches the latter stages of his career.
His contract with Al-Nassr is reportedly due to expire next summer, although the status of any potential renewal would need to be confirmed by the club or the player.
A move into management would place Ronaldo among a growing number of former elite players who have considered coaching after retirement. However, becoming a manager typically requires a commitment to coaching education, tactical development and the day-to-day responsibilities of leading a team.
For now, Simpson’s comments remain an endorsement of Ronaldo’s potential rather than confirmation of a future managerial appointment or career plan.
