Veteran Nigerian actor Dele Odule has called for public accountability when someone publicly disrespects or embarrasses another person.
The respected actor shared his position in an Instagram post, advising people not to settle for private apologies after experiencing public humiliation.
According to Odule, a person who chooses to disrespect someone openly should also be willing to apologise openly.
He wrote: “Never accept a private apology for public disrespect, never ever.”
The veteran actor explained that a private apology may not adequately address the damage caused by a public act of disrespect.
He argued that apologising behind closed doors after embarrassing someone publicly could primarily make the person who caused the offence feel better without fully addressing the humiliation suffered by the other party.
Odule further maintained that accountability should take place in the same setting where the disrespect occurred.
His comments have drawn attention to the issue of public apologies, personal dignity and the importance of taking responsibility for actions that affect others publicly.
