Patients and hospital staff at P and G Hospital in Abule-Egba, Lagos State, have reportedly foiled an alleged attempt to steal a newborn baby, leading to the arrest of a female suspect.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, according to reports.
The suspect allegedly disguised herself as a pregnant woman by stuffing pieces of cloth beneath her clothing to create the appearance of a baby bump. Another woman was reportedly involved in the plan, allegedly posing as someone who had accompanied her to the hospital for delivery.
The alleged attempt was uncovered after patients and hospital workers became aware of the situation and intervened.
A video circulating on social media reportedly shows the arrested woman carrying the pieces of cloth allegedly used to simulate a pregnancy.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi said the suspect was in custody while officers continued efforts to arrest her alleged accomplice.
“The alleged perpetrator is currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the accomplice and charge the case to court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” Adebisi said.
The police said the case would be taken to court after the investigation is completed.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt, including how the plan was discovered and whether any newborn was placed at immediate risk, were not fully detailed in the report.
The arrest comes as the police continue investigations into the incident. The allegations against the suspect have not yet been established in court.
