The Mexican government has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, ending an eight-month wait for the diplomatic clearance required to complete his posting.
Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, October 20, in a post on his official X account, confirming that the Mexican government had granted the necessary diplomatic approval, known as an agrément.
According to Omokri, José Manuel Briseño Flores, chargé d’affaires at the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, delivered the formal approval to Babagana Wakil, director of protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Expressing his gratitude over the development, Omokri wrote: “To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me.”
The approval clears a major diplomatic requirement that had delayed Omokri’s deployment since President Bola Tinubu approved the appointment of ambassador-designates and high commissioners earlier in the year.
In March, Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassador-designates and high commissioners to various countries. Omokri was among those selected, with Mexico designated as his country of assignment.
However, his posting remained pending while the Nigerian government awaited formal consent from the Mexican authorities.
Under diplomatic practice, an agrément is the official consent a receiving country grants before a proposed ambassador can be formally appointed to serve in that country. The approval is a key step in the process of establishing an ambassador’s diplomatic posting.
With Mexico’s approval now communicated to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the outstanding diplomatic clearance for Omokri’s assignment has been obtained.
The development marks progress in the process of deploying Nigeria’s ambassador-designates to their respective countries following Tinubu’s earlier approval of the appointments.
