The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, following a report about herbal products allegedly bearing falsified registration numbers.
The agency disclosed that its investigative team carried out surveillance operations after receiving information about the suspected fraudulent use of NAFDAC registration details on herbal products.
During the operation, the team discovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters carrying NAFDAC Registration Number A7-1827L.
However, verification through NAFDAC’s official registration portal revealed that the number belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, indicating that the registration details had been used fraudulently on the herbal products.
NAFDAC said the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer was not present during the operation. The company’s manager was subsequently arrested for further interrogation as investigations into the alleged illegal manufacturing activities continued.
The agency reiterated the importance of verifying product registration details to help protect consumers from potentially unsafe or improperly regulated products.
NAFDAC also urged members of the public to report suspected illegal manufacturing facilities and other activities involving falsified product registration numbers.
Consumers and concerned individuals can contact the agency through its call centre on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322. Reports can also be sent to [email protected].
The development highlights the agency’s ongoing efforts to tackle the circulation of improperly registered products and protect public health in Nigeria.
