Two miners have been shot dead by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias at a mining site in Kuru Jenta, Heipang District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack reportedly occurred at about 11:30 pm on Friday, while the victims and other miners were working at the site.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.
Tengwong described the attack as unprovoked and unfortunate, noting that it occurred barely a week after two other miners were killed at a separate mining site in Rakum village, Jos South Local Government Area.
He called on security agencies to investigate the latest incident, identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.
The BYM spokesperson also warned residents, particularly those involved in mining, against carrying out operations at night amid the prevailing security concerns in the area.
He urged miners to remain vigilant and comply with security measures introduced by the government to reduce the risk of further attacks.
Tengwong expressed concern that the killings occurred despite an existing curfew imposed by the Plateau State Government on three local government areas, including Barkin Ladi, where the latest attack took place.
He appealed to residents to respect the restricted hours and avoid activities that could expose them to security threats.
The latest killings have renewed concerns over the safety of miners and other residents in parts of Plateau State, with the Berom group urging authorities to take action to prevent further loss of life.
