A heartbreaking incident has claimed the lives of a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Abdullahi, and his 15-year-old daughter, Fiddausi Abubakar, after they fell into an abandoned dry well in Yancibi Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The tragedy occurred on Monday, July 21, and was confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi, the Tsanyawa Fire Service Office received an emergency call on Monday evening reporting that the father and daughter had fallen into the abandoned well.
Firefighters from the Tsanyawa station were immediately deployed to the scene and began rescue efforts. However, the operation could not be completed that night because of poor visibility and the difficult conditions at the site.
To strengthen the rescue mission, the Fire Service headquarters dispatched an additional emergency response team early on Tuesday.
According to the statement, rescuers later recovered both victims from the well, but they were found unconscious and were subsequently confirmed dead.
The remains of Abubakar Abdullahi and his daughter were handed over to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani.
Initial investigations by the Fire Service indicate that Fiddausi accidentally fell into the abandoned well. Her father reportedly entered the well in an attempt to save her but became trapped, resulting in the deaths of both father and daughter.
Reacting to the incident, the Kano State Fire Service expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and urged members of the public to avoid entering wells or other confined spaces without the appropriate rescue equipment and the assistance of trained emergency personnel.
The agency stressed that rescue operations in such environments should be left to professionals to prevent further loss of life.
