“No US Troops Taking Over Nigeria” — DHQ Clarifies Security Deal With America Amid Speculation

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a fresh clarification on Nigeria’s security cooperation with the United States, following widespread speculation about the alleged presence of US troops in the country.

In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the Nigeria–US partnership is long-standing and remains structured, focusing mainly on:

  • Capacity building

  • Professional military education

  • Intelligence sharing

  • Logistics support

  • Strategic dialogue

“Nigeria’s Sovereignty Is Fully Respected”

DHQ stressed that all engagements are carried out with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and are conducted strictly under existing bilateral agreements.

Working Group Meeting Explained

Uba also referenced a recent two-day high-level Working Group meeting held at the Office of the National Security Adviser, involving senior US officials and Nigerian counterparts.

He said discussions centered on proposals aimed at:

  • Strengthening cooperation mechanisms

  • Improving coordination

  • Enhancing accountability in joint counter-terrorism efforts

  • Prioritising protection of civilians and community safety

He added that the proposals are still being reviewed by relevant Nigerian authorities.
