Police Inspector Dies After Lightning Strike In Maiduguri

A police inspector identified as Abdulkadir Garba, popularly known as “Buratai,” has died after being struck by lightning while on duty in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The incident was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, in a tribute shared on Friday.

According to Daso, the tragic incident happened on Wednesday at about 2:19 p.m. while the officer was carrying out traffic and parking control duties opposite the Borno State Police Command headquarters.

Garba was reportedly working alongside his senior colleague, Wazani Adamu, when heavy winds and rainfall began.

The police spokesperson said both officers attempted to seek shelter before the rain intensified but were struck by lightning before reaching safety.

While ASP Wazani Adamu survived the incident, Inspector Garba reportedly died after sustaining partial burns from the lightning strike.

Daso described the deceased officer as hardworking, dedicated, and passionate about his duties.

He noted that Garba’s sudden death has left colleagues and members of the public in shock and mourning.

The spokesperson also reflected on the unpredictability of life, stating that the officer lost his life while actively serving the public.

The incident has generated reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late officer.
