Enugu Women Protest Against Alleged Rise Of Prostitution In Elugwu Akwu Community

Women in Elugwu Akwu, a community in Enugu State, staged a public protest against the activities of alleged commercial sex workers operating in the area.

The demonstration, which has since gone viral on social media, saw dozens of women marching through the community with placards while chanting messages calling for action over what they described as a growing social concern.

Videos from the protest showed the women moving through major parts of the community, expressing frustration over the alleged increase in prostitution and its perceived impact on families and relationships.

According to some of the protesters, residents have become increasingly worried about the situation and believe urgent measures are needed to address it.

The women claimed that the activities of sex workers in the area were contributing to family disputes and negatively affecting the moral fabric of the community.

Several placards carried during the protest contained messages demanding an end to prostitution within the neighbourhood.

One of the prominently displayed messages read:

“Ashawo must go. End ashawo in Elugwu Akwu.”

The protest attracted the attention of residents and passers-by, many of whom stopped to watch the procession as it moved through the community.

Since videos of the demonstration surfaced online, Nigerians have shared mixed reactions.

While some social media users supported the women and argued that communities have the right to uphold standards they believe protect family values and social stability, others called for a broader conversation about the economic realities that push many people into sex work.

Some commentators also argued that addressing unemployment, poverty and social welfare challenges should be part of any long-term solution.

The protest has since sparked wider discussions on morality, economic hardship, community values and the social issues affecting many urban and semi-urban communities across Nigeria.

As debates continue online, the incident has drawn national attention to the concerns raised by residents and the broader conversation surrounding commercial sex work and community development in the country.
