Peter Obi Appeals To Critics, Says Future Generations Deserve Better Opportunities

Former Labour Party presidential candidate and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Peter Obi, has appealed to Nigerians who remain unconvinced by his political message to consider the future of younger generations.

Speaking during an interview with journalist Rufai Oseni, Obi said his mission is to help build a country where young Nigerians can enjoy the same opportunities that were available to his generation.

According to him, many older Nigerians have already attained financial success and should focus on creating a better future for the next generation rather than pursuing endless wealth accumulation.

Obi also criticised what he described as growing greed among some members of the political and economic class, arguing that many people continue to acquire resources far beyond their actual needs.

Appealing directly to those who may not support him politically, the former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians to think about the kind of country they want to leave behind for their children and grandchildren.

“I am appealing to them, for the sake of their own grandchildren, let’s build a society. Some of them might think they have made enough money. I want to give young Nigerians the opportunity God gave me back then,” Obi said.

He further questioned the pursuit of excessive wealth by older generations.

“People of my age today are stealing what they don’t need. How long will they live?” he asked.

Reflecting on his early business career, Obi recalled a period when Nigeria’s economy offered greater opportunities for entrepreneurs and ordinary citizens.

He revealed that he bought his first brand-new car in 1981 for ₦2,700 before later purchasing a Peugeot 505 SR for ₦7,200.

The former governor also spoke about his years as a trader, noting that he frequently travelled abroad during a time when international travel was more accessible for many Nigerians.

Using those experiences as an example, Obi argued that previous generations benefited from economic conditions that allowed hard work and enterprise to flourish.

His remarks have since generated discussion online, with supporters describing the comments as a call for responsible leadership and long-term national development, while critics questioned his assessment of Nigeria’s past and present economic realities.

The interview adds to the growing political conversations ahead of the 2027 elections, as debates continue over governance, economic opportunities and the future direction of the country.

Rufai Oseni: Did you have a message for those who, no matter what you say, will never say, “Let me give this man a chance”?

Mr. Peter Obi: I am appealing to them, for the sake of their own grandchildren, let’s build a society. Some of them might think they have made enough… https://t.co/ArBWA5ClSm pic.twitter.com/SzwJj0W7dG
