The Federal Government has announced plans to allow journalists accompany military units during selected operations as part of efforts to improve security reporting and strengthen public understanding of ongoing military activities across the country.
Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, disclosed the plan on Thursday at the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abuja.
The minister was represented at the event by his Special Adviser, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole (rtd.).
According to him, the initiative is designed to foster stronger collaboration between the media and security agencies while promoting transparency and public confidence in military operations.
Musa described the media as a vital stakeholder in national security management, noting that modern security challenges are no longer fought only on land, air or sea, but also within the information space.
He said accurate and responsible reporting plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and supporting national security efforts.
“More than ever before, the media are not only enablers; they are stabilizers of government,” he said.
The Defence Minister explained that the proposed arrangement would allow journalists gain firsthand knowledge of operational realities, helping them provide more accurate and balanced reports on military activities.
“The Defence Ministry is exploring arrangements to embed journalists with military units during operations to enable more accurate reporting and deeper understanding of operational realities,” he stated.
Musa stressed that success in modern warfare should not be measured solely by battlefield victories but also by the level of trust and confidence citizens have in security institutions.
He noted that misinformation, disinformation and propaganda have become major components of contemporary security threats, making credible journalism increasingly important.
The proposed initiative is expected to provide journalists with greater access to operational environments while helping security agencies communicate their activities more effectively to the public.
The announcement comes amid ongoing military operations against insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges across various parts of Nigeria.
If implemented, the programme could mark a significant shift in the relationship between the media and the military, offering journalists direct exposure to security operations while promoting transparency and accountability.
