Abia Government Bans Commercial Motorcycles In Umuahia, Aba And Ohafia

The Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as Okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia.

The ban, approved by Governor Alex Otti, will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.

The announcement was made on Saturday by the State Commissioner for Information, Okay Kanu, who said the measure forms part of the government’s efforts to improve security, public safety and traffic management across major urban centres in the state.

According to the government, the decision is also aimed at creating a more organized and efficient transportation system within the affected cities.

As a result, all commercial motorcycle operators have been directed to stop operations in Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia on or before the implementation date.

The government said security agencies and relevant enforcement bodies have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

It warned that any operator found violating the order would face legal consequences.

“Any individual or operator found violating this order shall be arrested, while the motorcycle involved shall be confiscated in accordance with the law,” the government stated.

The state government also appealed to residents, transport unions, community leaders and other stakeholders to support the implementation of the policy.

According to officials, the move is intended to enhance public safety, reduce criminal activities often associated with unregulated motorcycle transport and support the state’s broader urban development agenda.

The ban is expected to affect thousands of commercial motorcycle operators across the three cities, with authorities expected to provide further details on alternative transportation arrangements in the coming days.

Residents have been advised to comply with the directive and cooperate with enforcement agencies as the new policy takes effect.
