Popular Nigerian sports journalist Oma Akatugba has shared an unusual story involving Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, revealing that the Udinese shot-stopper once declined the advances of a daughter of a Nigerian billionaire.
Akatugba disclosed the incident in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, recalling a visit to Okoye during his time with Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam while the goalkeeper was based in the Netherlands.
According to the journalist, Okoye showed him a message he had received from the daughter of a prominent Nigerian businessman. Excited by the development, Akatugba said he immediately encouraged the goalkeeper to take the opportunity seriously because of the woman’s wealthy background.
Recounting the experience, the broadcaster said he jokingly described the lady as a “big fish,” believing the relationship could be worthwhile. However, Okoye reportedly had other ideas and chose not to pursue it.
Akatugba said the former Watford goalkeeper responded with a laugh, explaining that the woman did not meet his personal standards of attraction. The journalist admitted he was stunned by the response and could only react with disbelief.
The identity of the billionaire’s daughter was not revealed in the post.
Okoye has remained one of Nigeria’s most recognizable football stars since making his debut for the Super Eagles in 2019. Aside from his performances on the pitch, the goalkeeper has attracted significant attention from fans on social media because of his looks and physique.
Over the years, the 25-year-old has made it clear that he is in a committed relationship. Okoye is currently with Dutch model Jelicia Westhoff, and the couple share a son, Isaiah Emil Okoye.
Akatugba’s revelation has since sparked reactions among football fans and social media users, with many discussing the goalkeeper’s decision and his long-standing relationship with Westhoff.
