Tinubu Mourns Victims of Lagos–Ibadan Expressway Crash Involving Anthony Joshua

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow following reports that world heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road accident on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State.

The accident reportedly resulted in the death of two individuals, while Joshua sustained minor injuries and is said to be receiving medical care.

What Happened

Preliminary reports indicate that the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua collided with a stationary truck on the busy expressway. While investigations are ongoing, early information suggests that speed and traffic violations may have contributed to the crash. Authorities are examining the scene and interviewing witnesses to establish the exact cause.

Casualties

The collision claimed the lives of two occupants. Among the deceased was reportedly Latz, identified as Anthony Joshua’s personal trainer, who had arrived in Nigeria less than 24 hours before the incident. His death was confirmed by three-division boxing world champion Badou Jack, who paid tribute via social media.

Tinubu’s Message of Condolence

In a message addressed to Joshua, President Tinubu conveyed his sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families:

“AJ,
I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries.

This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season. I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident.

As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country—qualities that have made you a source of national pride.

In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.

I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and eternal rest to the souls of the departed.”

Investigation Continues

Security and road safety agencies have ordered a full investigation into the crash. Findings are expected to be made public upon completion. Officials have also reiterated calls for caution on highways, particularly during peak travel periods.

This remains a developing story, and updates will follow as authorities release further verified information.
