Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has broken his silence following his son Abba Abubakar’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a purely personal decision with no political rift or family tension attached.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Atiku clarified that his son’s choice should not be misinterpreted.
“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect,” he said.
Abba’s defection comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Support for Tinubu’s Second Term
Atiku further stated that following the development, he would work with Senator Barau toward the realization of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
“With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actualise the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027. To this effect, I am directing all coordinators of my association to join the APC and work for President Tinubu,” he added.
Atiku Raises Concerns Over Governance
Despite the political development, Atiku stressed that his core concern remains governance and the welfare of Nigerians, expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of the nation.
“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he said, noting that he remains committed to working with “like-minded patriots” to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative.
Abba Signals Full APC Alignment
Abba Abubakar’s defection also saw his political structure undergo a rebranding, with the Haske Atiku Organisation renamed to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, signaling full alignment with the ruling party.
